Digital Folklore is a fusion of audio drama and narrative documentary exploring how our online expressions and culture- from scary stories to cat memes- are folklore.
Digital Folklore is a fully immersive, sound designed show that uses storytelling, voice acting, interviews, and scripted narrative to analyze various expressions of internet culture through the lens of academic folklore.
With topics ranging from the absurd to the unsettling, the Digital Folklore podcast is an accessible and entertaining way to learn about folkloric concepts and societal truths.
Monsters, memes, internet urban legends, conspiracies, viral crazes and how each holds up a mirror to the society from which they emerge.
Episodes will be released weekly each Monday in alternating formats: LORE and FOLK:
LORE: highly sound designed, cinematic journeys exploring specific topics related to digital folklore.
FOLK: lightly sound designed episodes focusing more on deep-dive interviews with academics, subject matter experts, internet culture influencers, etc.
Who makes this thing?
Perry Carpenter is the founder of 8th Layer Media and one of the hosts of the Digital Folklore podcast. He's the author of two books and has published way too many research papers and online articles. Perry is also the creator and host of the "8th Layer Insights" podcast which explores the human side of cybersecurity. His day job is that of Chief Evangelist and Strategy Officer for cybersecurity training company, KnowBe4.
Mason Amadeus is 8th Layer Media's creative director, lead audio engineer, and cohost of the Digital Folklore podcast.
Mason's background in audio began as a hobby before he transitioned into an eight-year, multifarious career in terrestrial radio. Mason is also a freelance podcast producer, voice actor, sound designer for live theater productions, and collector of tedious hobbies.
